Flat Bottom Silo (Flat Bottom Grain Silo)

1. Basic Structure

• Body: Cylindrical corrugated galvanized steel wall.
• Bottom: Flat steel floor + concrete foundation (no cone).
• Roof: Inverted cone roof with vents, manhole, loading inlet.
• Unloading system:
  • Perforated aeration duct
  • Sump pit + unloading auger
  • Sweeper auger to push remaining grain to the center

2. How It Works

• Grain is loaded from the top.
• Most grain flows by gravity to the center sump.
• A sweeper auger cleans the remaining grain on the flat floor.
• Full discharge is achieved mechanically.

3. Main Advantages

• Large storage capacity (from hundreds to 10,000+ tons per silo).
• Lower cost per ton than hopper silos.
• Stable structure, suitable for very tall, big silos.
• Better for long‑term storage.
• Standardized and widely used worldwide.

4. Disadvantages (vs Hopper Silo)

• Needs mechanical unloading system (augers, motors).
• Higher maintenance than hopper bottom.
• Longer unloading time.
• Heavier and more complex concrete foundation.
